REPORT

The 6th Australian Access Dinghy Championships were held at
Lake Tuggeranong in ACT on 2 & 3 March. This regatta is a celebration of ability as sailors with any type of disability are able to compete with sailors who have no disability.

There were 147 sailors competing in 7 divisions, sailing 75 Access Dinghies.
Competitors were from "Sailability" and "Sailing for Everyone" clubs in Qld,
NSW, ACT and Victoria with strong contingents from Japan, Singapore and
Canada. Sailing teams were sent by Anson Street Special School in Orange and Ewing School for the Deaf in Ballarat.

The regatta's major sponsor was NSW & ACT Masons. During the weekend over 100 volunteers from the ACT Scouting Movement provided the man-power for launching boats, transferring sailors, on-water support and catering. The weekend was a demonstration of what can be achieved when whole communities work together.

Again, strong international contingents participated. For the third year there was a strong Japanese cultural influence. This year saw the instigation of two Japanese trophies into our regatta - one for Volunteers and the other of Consistency in Sailing. Our Australian team is looking forward to travelling to Osaka in Oct. to sail in the 3rd International Access Dinghy C'ships.

Picture above L-R: Nobi Nishii (President Sailability Japan), Nobuyo Matsumoto (from Ushimado Yacht Club, Sumameri) and Terry Peek (Chairman of Sailability ACT and regatta co-ordinator)

The six strong team from Singapore performed exceptionally well taking out many trophies, including the Teams Trophy. Our congratulations to all the Singaporean sailors as well as their coach Edward Yow.

Some interesting statistics:

There overall % of disabled competitors = 63% with the breakdown for divisions as follows:

2.3 Div 1 = 56%; Div 2 = 72%; Div 3 = 100%; Div 4 = 88%; Doubles = 54%

303 Div 6 = 75%; Doubles = 60%

The overall % of female sailors = 28% with the breakdown for divisions as follows:

2.3 Div 1 = 17%; Div 2 = 33%; Div 3 = 58%; Div 4 = 36%; Doubles = 54%

303 Div 6 = 0%; Doubles = 28%

With just 17% female sailors in 2.3 Div 1 and 0% in 303's there is obviously more work needing to be done to train female sailors up to the top divisions.
